Book at press, updated schedule, surveys imminent
about 7 years ago – Mon, Mar 06, 2017 at 08:09:41 PM

Hello, all!

Here's where we are.

The book is at press, soft proofs were approved after minor revisions, and production has begun.

We did lose a few weeks to Chinese New Year. For those of you who are blissfully unaware of the vagaries of international printing, Chinese New Year is a Really Big Deal in China. Essentially, all industry shuts down for roughly two weeks as workers return to celebrate with their home villages in the countryside. Inevitably, a number do not return to their jobs afterwards and February becomes a very difficult month in terms of production and planning. Our hard copy proofs arrived just before this period and it slowed down adjustments by a few weeks. However, that's over and here's our new schedule from our printer:

Start of printing: March 1st

Advance copies out from plant for approval: March 22 (based on advance copy approval by March 24th )

Bulk ex-factory: March 27 ETD

Arrival in port of Shenzhen: April 3

ETA at Seattle warehouse: May 10 (approx.)

ETA at Strix Publishing warehouse: May 17th (approx.)

ETA rewards to US Domestic backers: May 31st (approx). International backers will vary largely depending on location

This means that right now, the books are being printed! We anticipate advance printer copies arriving in the very near future and we'll share photos as soon as we have them in hand.

With the book at press, and printing schedule finalized, we're ready to launch our Backerkit survey. At this time, the survey has been built and is being reviewed by Backerkit's staff to ensure everything is functional. We expect to have it approved within 72 hours. Please keep an eye on your email and spam folders in the coming days to make sure you get your survey. When you fill out the survey you'll be charged for shipping, and have the opportunity to update your shipping address, purchase additional add-ons, or increase your chosen rewards.

We'll post another brief update when the surveys are launched to make sure everyone is informed.

Finally, our publisher is running a small and already funded campaign for a set of alchemical symbol pins. We're going to be doing some Problem Glyph pins (not as a Kickstarter, just for sale!) later this month, so check it out if you want a hint of what's coming.

Once again, thank you so much for your support and patience. The finish line is in sight and we're super excited to share photos of the advance copies in the coming weeks.

Printer proofs have arrived, printing to begin soon!
over 7 years ago – Thu, Jan 19, 2017 at 07:32:36 PM

We are very pleased to say that our printer proofs have arrived!

With these in hand we will begin the final round of proofing and make any necessary revisions. While we haven't had a chance to do more than skim—the proofs arrived about two hours ago!—a quick skim suggests the book is looking great!

We're also waiting on a white paper dummy that should arrive in the very near future. A dummy copy is a blank book assembled with all the materials we ordered. Once that arrives we can calculate what your shipping costs will be and send you your surveys via Backerkit. We expect to be able to send surveys within the next ~3 weeks. At this point, we are approximately 6-8 weeks from having the books at the Strix Publishing facilities in Seattle, Washington. Fulfillment to backers will begin immediately upon their arrival.

We'll post another update when the dummy copy shows up, but in the meantime, here are a few pics of the proofs. Thanks so much for your patience and support!

An overdue update
over 7 years ago – Thu, Oct 27, 2016 at 10:03:39 PM

First, let me apologize for the delay in this update. It's been a very busy few months and I wanted to make sure we had all our ducks in a row before posting again. We'll do better to keep you in the loop in the future.

As things stand, the bad news is the book will be delayed until March. A combination of miscommunications with the printer about our quote and a lengthy spell of serious illness for Eliza conspired to prevent us from having the book press-ready on schedule. My deepest apologies for this inconvenience. Having said that, I'm pleased to say the book is ready for press and we have ironed out the confusion with our printer. I believe the book is now ready to be printed to a standard that we'll be proud to produce and that you'll be proud to display on your bookshelf/coffee table/nefarious altar.

By way of apology for the delay, we're going to make a PDF of the book's glyphs available to all of you now. This is just the "guts" of the book. We'd like to keep the foreword, introduction, and index reserved for the full release in early 2017. Again, my deepest apologies for the delay but I hope this goes some way towards making it up to you.

In other news, our Backerkit survey is nearly complete (building out a way to make all 100 glyph art prints available took some work!) and will be coming to you within the next few weeks. We'll update the KS as well before it goes out, and again when we make it live.

Finally, with the contents of the Problem Glyphs art book complete, Eliza had the time to produce a little something for the final Strix Publishing project of the year, The Book of Three Gates

"Lavinia and Child," Eliza Gauger, 2016
"Lavinia and Child," Eliza Gauger, 2016

"Lavinia and Child" portrays one of H.P. Lovecraft's rare female characters in a tender moment as she offers her child, Wilbur Whately, the son of Yog-Sothoth, a toothsome treat. This Kickstarter exclusive art print is available only as an add-on and will never again be available once this campaign ends. If you enjoy horror fiction and illustration, I hope you'll take a moment to look at The Book of Three Gates before the portals close in early November.

Once again, my deepest apologies for the delay, but I promise you that we've used the time to ensure that the Problem Glyphs art book is going to be the beautiful tome you deserve.

Cheers!

Quick update: prepping files for press!
almost 8 years ago – Wed, Jul 13, 2016 at 10:46:56 PM

Hello everyone,

We don't have an awful lot to report just yet, but we're hard at work preparing the files for press. A large portion of this work is converting glyphs into vector files so that they can be properly scaled to meet the book's interior dimensions. We're almost done with this portion of the work which leaves the book cover to be finalized and the index. We've paid all of our external contributors (editor, layout, graphic designers, videographer) and should be going to press within the next few weeks. We'll share some sneak peeks at the back cover when it's done and generally keep you posted on how things are progressing!

While we're doing this, our publisher, Strix Publishing, is also hard at work on their next project. APOCRYPHA: The Art of Jason Soles, is already halfway funded! Jason is a very old friend of mine, whose work made a tremendous impact on me years before I ever met him. His hellish masks, Lovecraftian idols, and finely wrought craft are macabre and wonderful. You can also view some live-stream video footage I helped with last weekend. This video showcases his incredible patina work on the bronze rewards for the Kickstarter. The books also contains detailed notes on his artistic processes from concept to sculpting to mold making and finally through the primal and alchemical processes of lost wax bronze casting. If you're interested in art inspired by Cthulhu, alchemy, and the occult, I hope you'll take a moment to check out his project and consider supporting him as he has supported me over the years.

Thanks again for your support of Problem Glyphs, we'll have more news for you all soon!
